Former BET personality Donnie Simpson is leaving his long-running morning radio show, 'Donnie Simpson Show' in Washington, DC.
The green-eyed talent, best known for hosting BET's 'Video Soul' for 14 years, had been helming his morning radio program on WPGC-FM in the nation's capital since 1993.
Though the show was never syndicated, Simpson was the first urban-format radio personality to have an annual salary over $1 million without his morning show being national.
The 56-year-old talent was expected to retire last year when his contract expired, but much to the chagrin of station management – who were preparing another BET personality Big Tigger to take over the slot – Simpson announced at a company gathering that he intended to continue his morning show for several more years.
The 32-year radio veteran, who hosted the 'Donnie Simpson Show' on WPGC for 17 years, was rumored to have taken a substantial pay cu
t to continue the show.
Last June, Simpson's longtime sidekick, comedian Chris Paul, left the show unexpectedly to join the 'Tom Joyner Morning Show' as a contributor.
Paul was the second person to defect Simpson's show for Joyner's nationally syndicated show. In 2007, comic Huggy Lowdown, the most recognizable featured player on Simpson's show, bolted for the 'Tom Joyner Morning Show.'
Regardless, less than a year after inking a new contract with CBS Radio, the BET Walk of Fame inductee is ending his run at WPGC this Friday after months of allegedly bickering with station management.
His actual contract does not expire until March 2011 and Simpson will not be allowed to work at another station for the next 13 1/2 months.
He reportedly asked the station not to give him a big send off.
Reps for WPGC and CBS Radio refuse to comment on the matter.

I'm gonna cry when Donnie leaves. I have followed him from WKYS to WPGC and just like I left WKYS with him I will do the same when he leaves WPGC. And I'm sure it will be a whole lot of listeners doing the same. I'm sure WPGC will be looking for someone big to take his place and Tigger just don't cut it.

Go Donnie… You are fabulous.....I support local talent 100%. Back in the day, it provided a platform for young new talent to debut their unique Gift of Gab. I love the fact you could drive from city to city and each city had astounding new original, talent. Not Joyner on every station. That is how I found "Quite Storm" DC 1976. My brother and his colleagues would never have been able to open WWWS in the 70's, Saginaw, MI. When he went to Germany during the Vietnam War, he was allowed to entertain the troops. Please come back. It was not broken. Someone got Greedy aqnd corned the market...TJ

Mr. Simpson was/is one of the reasons why I got into the broadcast business. He will surely be missed. Why not give that man what he deserves! It is a shame that we push our legends to the side. It is sad when folks jump to what they think is a better situation.Mr. Simpson is local and has done a bunch for the community and entertainment. Nothing against TIGGER, but he is no Donnie. Again we are dumbing down for the sake of ratings. THANK YOU MR.SIMPSON and you will be missed.

Why is eveybody acting like Donnie had one of the hottest shows out. In the past few years the show has gone down hill. I understand he is a legend and no one can ever take that from him but sometimes you have to know when its your time. I havent enjoyed listning to th Donnie Simpson mornig show since Hugie left. I saw this coming along time ago the show wasnt great it was just ok on its best day, even when our fav celebs would call in which was prob only good thing about it. You have to know when to gracefully bow out pass the tourch he had a great run but he is past his prime as far as Im conserned. I have much much love for Donnie but when its time to go its time to go...

Donnie Simpson, is a pioneer I almost think there would not be a BET today had it not been for Donnie Simpson. Maybe BET can pull together some of those old classics with Donnie back in the day interviewing some of the hottest singers of todays R&B.it would be fitting tribute to the man that gave it a smooth touch.
