Reality Check: Sandhurst Talks About Life After 'Make Me A Supermodel'

SandhurstSandhurst Miggins is a Trinidad and Tobago-bred model who became a fan favorite on the sophomore season of Bravo's hit reality show, 'Make Me A Supermodel,' which was hosted by Tyson Beckford.

A classically trained dancer, Miggins has more than 12 years of dance experience under his belt and is proficient in ballroom dance, ballet, tap, modern and African dance forms.

Though he was the runner-up on 'Make Me A Supermodel,' Miggins still landed a contract with New York Model Management, who currently oversees his career.

The charismatic model, who recently graduated from Temple University in Philadelphia, called me from his new home in Queens, New York to update me on life after reality television.

So you went back to school after you taped the show?

It has been crazy. Right after we filmed the show, it was extremely important for me to finish my degree. Colin and I were the only ones that were still in school so I went back to Philadelphia and finished my degree. I am proud to say that I have my Bachelor of Arts in Strategic and Organizational Communications with an emphasis in Public Relations. The day after, I moved to New York and just trying to get that hustle on, get those castings and try to get this career off the ground.

Though you didn't win the show, you still ended up with a modeling contract, right?

RiSandhurst, Branden, Tyson Beckford, Nicole Trunfio & Jonathan ght after the show, New York Model Management, which is the show that gave the contract to the winner, offered me a contract as well. I took it because New York Model Management has always been the agency that I wanted to sign with first. They said, 'Come on down, let's sign these papers' and I was all too happy to jump on that.

So how is the work for a Black male model that just came off of a reality show? Are things going good?

I have yet to actually book a model job. The fashion industry is a very specific one. I have been to some of the castings. I have been requested by Ralph Lauren and I've been to Barcelona. The thing about the industry is that it is true that there are less castings for Black models. The amount of castings that I am sent on are considerably less than some of my Caucasian counterparts. I knew about that going into the industry so it wasn't something that I was blind to. The other thing is that we're in a recession so the castings on a whole have been cut. The season has been slow so it's been a real fight for castings. My other challenge is that the male model is supposed to be 6'1. I am three inches taller than that standard so it's hard for me to fit into some of the clothes when I do get to go to castings. At this point and time I am still working and thinking positive to book these jobs. I have done some shows last year like Bikini Under the Bridge, which was done in Brooklyn. It's always fun for me because doing the runway is my thing. That has been the highlight of my modeling career so far.

Since you are a dancer, would you like to do a Broadway production or some project that allows you to showcase that talent?

From doing the show I realized how much I love performing whether it be in front of the television, camera or onstage. I am now trying to start dancing and performing again. I had deferred a semester off from school and I basically jumped right back into school and stopped dancing when the show ended. When I moved to New York this summer I was focused on modeling. I am getting back into it and auditioning for Broadway and having some minor successes. Broadway is also a field that takes time and perseverance. You have to keep going to these castings as well. I feel great that I am pursuing everything. It's almost like I am checking off a list. Modeling, Broadway and I am also trying to get back on television as well.

Are there any specific productions that you could see yourself in?

I think I am Simba quintessentially so I would have to say 'The Lion King.' I just love the production, the costuming and the choreography of the show. It's funny because I don't have that much modern dance experience and the show is basically choreographed from that technique. I think Simba is me and I see myself as Simba. Later on I see myself as Mustafa because I like the whole strong king kind of thing.

Your confessionals on the show were so funny. It would be entertaining to see you do some red carpet commentaries because your wittiness and background in fashion would make you perfect for it.

I personally would love to do something like that. At the same time, at this point I would need to bring my own camera and microphone and pray to God that they don't kick me off of the red carpet. I would love to do hosting more so than going on television andSandhurst acting. I would love to host because I think it's fun. I did some of it for Bravo TV's website. I just like to put in my two cents and make a little comment here and there. My family likes to put in our little things sometime.

When was the last time you went back to the Caribbean?

This year, I have only been back to the islands once and that's really like minimal compared to last year. Last year, I went about eight times. My mother would be like, 'Sandhurst I miss you, come home and here's a ticket' and I'd be like, 'okay.' This year, I had to finish school, I had to move to New York, I've been so busy that I couldn't go back home, but I will be going back for Christmas. I'm not too sure how that's gonna work out because Fashion Week is around the same time.

Are you a social networking website junkie?

I was on all of them. I was the online freak of the show, but my face started to get a bit out of hand. I had to shut down my MySpace. I am always on Facebook and Twitter.

What's the biggest misconception about you?

A lot of people think that I am gay because I was very nice on the show and I dance. I think that one would be the biggest misconception about me right now.
