"I'm a single mother who has to make a living to support me and my child. I am someone who to this day cannot keep her house organized. I do not have a nanny. I have a babysitter I share with my ex-husband. I have a dog I have to get a urine sample from, and I'm trying to figure out how I'm going to do that. Do I put a plate under him? More often that not, people in the public eye are more real than people who see people in the public eye believe them to be. I'm a working mom still trying to keep it all together, who still needs to lose those last 10 pounds I've been fighting with my entire life. I'm no different."
– Audra McDonald, star of ABC's 'Private Practice,' talks about her real-life struggles in a cover story for the new Aug/Sept issue of Heart & Soul magazine.
The four-time Tony Award-winning Broadway actress/singer also talks about her divorce from musician Peter Donovan; the brief time she spent in a psychiatric hospital; and the death of her father in the four-page cover feature written by Tonya Pendleton.

Yeah, a "normal life" for the stars is not like a normal life for those of us who are struggling to work, pay bills, care for your kids without a babysitter, etc. I have no sympathy for stars who can afford everything they need without having to worry whether they have to spend their last dollar on a gallon of milk or a gallon of gas. They can afford someone to watch their kids while they go to the fitness center and out to lunch with others. Try living on $24,000 a year with two kids, then complain about your poor little life.

If she really wants to know how to get a urine sample from her dog, a soup ladle (from a cheap store) works great. Then just pour the sameple in to an empty and clean baby food bottle. Best to do this in the back yard, as otherwise one looks like a nut.

Yet, you guys are the same ones who praise Mrs. Obama for being down to earth. She has more money than all of these struggling actresses combined.
I respect Audra for keeping it real. Money don't make you happy. Yes, it is nice not to struggle but I would trade a happy life over money any day of the week. Trust, in the business of money, it is very rare to have both.

WOah. What happened that she is getting/got divorced? When she was cast 2yrs ago for PrivatePractice I wondered how it would affect her family since she is NY based ofr her braodway career. I guess it is safe 2 think her move 2 Cali was a contributing factor /strain on the marriage.
Despite being on hi profile show Private Prac, her divorce made no press. While her co star Kate Walsh's divorce is all over the news.
