BET & The Game: Is There A Marriage In The Works?

The Game

Fans of 'The Game' are getting active and making noise about the possibility of the show being canceled by the CW network.

Last Friday's episode saw a ratings spike of more than a half-million viewers and for the first time in months, 'The Game' wasn't listed among the "Friday's Losers" in Media Week's Nielsen ratings recap.

In addition, if the CW opts not to renew the show, which would return as an hour-long dramedy if it does come back, Debra Lee, CEO of Black Entertainment Television told me that BET has serious interest in acquiring the series.

"We have been in discussions with them," Lee told me at the Townhouse Spa where Dasani Water hosted a luncheon for TLC singer Rozonda "Chilli" Thomas. "It's a question as to if we could make the budget work. 'The Game' has done so well since we have acquired it in re-runs."

The 54-year-old network executive told me that optioning 'The Game' would fit perfectly into their new "brand strategy" and that the network is committed to developing its own original scripted series as well.

Debra Lee"We're also looking for our own scripted shows," she offered. "Loretha Jones, our new head of programming, is looking for some. She's just going to take her time and get the right ones. I know she will do it soon."

Recently canceled CW sitcom 'Everybody Hates Chris' will also begin airing in re-runs on BET this fall.

Lee is convinced that whether BET lands 'The Game' or not, network viewers will soon see significant changes with cable's first African-American channel.

"I've been CEO for three years now and we've had a few hits and misses, but I think we're on the right track now. It's very exciting! Especially with our new brand strategy and defining who we are," she expressed. "People are already seeing the changes. When I'm out and about, people come up to me and say, 'Thank you!' We haven't even really started yet. So '09 is going to be a great year!"
