While film and TV mogul Tyler Perry partied with a who's who of Black star power at the opening of his Tyler Perry Studios in
BV Buzz reported on Friday that the gospel playwright had come under fire for unfair labor practices and the WGA filed charges with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), claiming that Perry had four writers from 'House of Payne' (Kellie Griffin, Christopher Moore, Teri Brown-Jackson and Lamont Ferrell) unlawfully fired because they wanted the union involved in their contract negotiations with Perry's company.
(Read 'Tyler Perry Protested: Man Behind Madea Accused Of Unfair Labor Practices' for details.)
Despite the shocking news about Perry terminating writers after refusing to pay minimum industry rates, health care, pension and residuals making headlines at the start of the weekend, the man behind 'Diary of a Mad Black Woman' and 'Why Did I Get Married' hosted the likes of Oprah Winfrey, Sidney Poitier, Cicely Tyson, Will Smith and Patti LaBelle at his new studio complex.
The 39-year-old New Orleans native, who has become one of modern Hollywood's most wealthiest moguls after allegedly being homeless and sleeping in his car, purchased 30 acres of land and a facility that once housed the Delta Air Lines' business center to open his multimillion-dollar TV and film studio.
While Perry celebrated his rags to riches story during the two-day complex opening, the WGA issued their open letter and the likes of Shonda Rhimes ('Grey's Anatomy'/'Private Practice'), Marc Cherry ('Desperate Housewives'), Tina Fey ('30 Rock'), Steve Peterman ('Hannah Montana'), Rene Balcer ('Law & Order'/'Law & Order: Criminal Intent'), Warren Hutcherson ('Everybody Hates Chris'/'The Bernie Mac Show') and 66 other show runners united to speak out against his actions.
Below you'll find the reprinted letter in its entirety.
*****
Dear Tyler Perry,
This season, scripted television programming will consist of about 150 shows employing 1,200 writers.
Of that universe, 149 shows and 1,193 writers will produce shows covered by the Writers Guild's Minimum Basic Agreement. The MBA guarantees minimum compensation, residuals, health coverage, and pension in addition to other benefits.
The big except
ion? Tyler Perry's 'House of Payne" and the seven writers who, collectively, played a key role in producing over 100 episodes of one of television's most successful sitcoms.
Right now, these seven writers are in a struggle with you, the producer of 'House of Payne,' to extend Guild coverage to the show. This past Monday, after months of negotiations with the Guild, four of the writers were abruptly and illegally fired because of their efforts to secure the same minimums and benefits as their peers.
We all know that producing television is a tough and uncertain business. But some things are simply not acceptable.
We have a simple ask – reinstate the writers and make a fair deal with WGA.
Respectfully,

Six Degrees of Tyler Perry
Six Degrees of Tyler Perry
In just three years, Tyler Perry has become the toast of Hollywood. Could you name another director black or white who can boast of having released six feature movie projects within a three year period? Nope. Not only did the New Orleans native write all of the storylines for the films, he starred in four. Combined, five of the films have grossed upwards of $250 million worldwide, some within budgets below $6 million. And with the major money train also comes associating with some of the biggest names in and out of the entertainment business. BlackVoices.com takes an introspective look at how a former homeless man turned chit'lin circuit theater czar has connections to the likes of Michael Jackson, Denzel Washington, Whitney Houston and Will Smith, to name a few. Check out Six Degrees of Tyler Perry.

People must understand that unions are not always in the best interest of film studios. Tyler Perry has opened up the first major black film studio ever in this country and all he is getting is nothing but problems. In order for him to succeed he must keep costs down and hire quality writers. Hollywood's films would cost less if it were not for the unions. I understand writers needs to be fairly compensated but they do not have the right to tell Tyler Perry how to run his show. They should be blessed to be working in the first place. Hollywood rarely hire black writers. I hope Tyler Perry helps rewrite the rules for the film industry. Tyler Perry is not in Hollywood, but Atlanta. It is a different ballgame. He does not have to follow the hollywood model.

THE ONE THING TYLER MUST REMEMBER IS THAT THERE ARE LEVELS OF LIVING AND EVERY LEVEL HAS DIFFERENT RULES. AS YOU GO UP IN LEVELS, BE PREPARED TO UPGRADE YOUR THINKING TO MATCH THE LEVEL YOU ARE ON...HOW HIGH DO YOU WANT TO GO? WELL WITH EVERY LEVEL YOU MUST MAKE THE FINANCIAL TRANSFORMATION. IF YOU WANT BILLIONS BE PREPARED TO SPEND MILLIONS...YOU CANT BE THE ONLY RICH MAN IN THE POT...YOU MUST ALSO MAKE THE PEOPLE RICH THAT HELP MAKE YOU RICH . TYLER YOU MUST GIVE UP SOMETHING TO GET SOMETHING! . YOU ARE ON A NEW LEVEL NOW, AND THESE ARE NOT PEOPLE FROM THE HOMELESS WRITERS ASSOCIATION.(LOL)
LEARN THE RULES AND REGULATIONS AND STRATEGY'S FOR EACH LEVEL THAT YOU APPROACH SO THAT YOU DON'T GET SUED. DO YOUR RESEARCH NEXT TIME BEFORE YOU ENTER THE LEVELS AND KEEP IN MIND THAT YOU MUST"GIVE UP SOMETHING TO GET SOMETHING!"

This is a buisness people! This is a film studio. In order for Tyler Perry to grow he has to keep compensation reasonable. He just opened up the studio. It is unfair to ask him for the same compensation as another studio like Dreamworks, Fox, MGM, etc. The major studios have been around for decades. It is historic what Perry has accomplished and blacks who have an opportunity to work for Perry should be grateful and support him trying to be a dominate force in the film industry.

RDR, as a former film student, I do understand how the industry works. I understand in a film's budget are above the line(actors and directors, writers) and below the line(production crew, etc). Above the line are the most costliest in the budget, but they are the most important. The actors bring in the audience and the producer and director make sure the film is completed successfully. Making sure you keep your budgets in line,is important in the film industry. Spike Lee has been in the industry now for decades and he has never done what Tyler Perry has accomplished. Tyler Perry understands numbers. Just because Tyler Perry is grossing alot of money, doesnt mean he is not using it to reinvest. I think it is so unfair to trash this man.

Those of you who think that folks are hating on Tyler did not read the letter correctly. The writers are asking for MINIMUM compensation. Many of the TV studios have over 10 shows on the air. Tyler has 2 shows. Those writers deserve the respect that are given to other writers in this BUSINESS! If the show goes off the air, these writers have nothing. If they get inured or sick, they have no safety net. All they are asking is minimum compensation. I bet that the cameramen, grips, director, set designer, lighting director are covered. If one person is covered, then everyone should be covered.

Lisa,
Trash him? No, I did not. Wouldn't ever do that to a person of color trying to be successful in this world. My point is he has to understand that these people are working in their best interest by working with the union to get a deal. It didn't say they were asking for some astronomical amount of money. A writer would be a fool to go into salary negotiations without proper representation. We don't know how much or if he was trying to lowball these writers. Tyler is free to reinvest as much as he wants but these writers aren't his family, they're his employees, professional writers, not new writers just coming out the gate. If by their writing, it's making him richer, they should be fairly compensated.
