Season two 'American Idol' winner Ruben Studdard has been hit with federal and state property liens for allegedly failing to pay nearly $200,000 in state and federal taxes, according to court records.
The Birmingham, Alabama-bred crooner owes the federal government $171,920 in unpaid income taxes, according to a lien filed in Jefferson County Circuit Court. Studdard also owes $21,730 in state income taxes.
The report indicates that the majority of the R&B singer's unpaid taxes are from 2003, the year that Studdard won 'American Idol.'
Beating out Clay Aiken, the 29-year-old singer earned a $1 million recording contract for winning the Fo
x reality series.
Court records indicate that Studdard apparently owes $19,581 in state income taxes and $163,836 in federal taxes for the period ending on Dec. 31, 2003.
The state liens were filed on July 25 and in addition to unpaid income taxes for 2003, Studdard was issued a separate lien of $2,149 for the period ended Dec. 31, 2005.
The singer's federal liens were filed in May 2008 and included one for $8,083 for the period ending on Dec. 31, 2005.
The tax liens were filed against Studdard as an individual and should not impact the singer's business ventures through his incorporated entity.

"The Velvet Teddy Bear," a name he was given by R&B legend Gladys Knight, also launched a plus-sized women's modeling agency in 2006 in
In 2006, Studdard was awarded $2 million in a lawsuit against his former business manager in which he claimed the manager misappropriated funds.
The funds were allegedly taken between August 2003 and November 2004. The judge awarded Studdard $500,000 in actual losses and $1.5 million in punitive damages.
Studdard's former record company, Sony BMG, has agreed to cease distribution of his junior release, 'The Ret
urn,' as a part of a lawsuit filed by Louis Vuitton.
Louis Vuitton filed suit against the music company and Sony BMG has agreed to pay the high-end fashion house $155,830 after it proved the label used its Toile Monogram and Multicolore trademarks in music videos and on CDs by Studdard, Britney Spears and Da Brat.
The newly married singer – he wed Surata Zuri McCants on June 28 – is currently without a record deal after being dropped by J Records last year.
Starting in November, he'll star in the touring production of the Broadway show, 'Ain't Misbehavin,' alongside fellow 'A.I.' participants Frenchie Davis and Trenyce.

If you win a big lottery, or a sweepstkes or big horse race bet, the taxes are collected before you ever get a check. Why aren't TV networks and record companies required to withhold taxes like every other employer? We are the losers, because so many times the tax cheats, or victims of crooked managers or poor advice (whatever the cause) are broke and can't pay. So OUR taxes go up to cover the loss of revenue. The temptation is too great for rags-to-riches singers, the get greedy. They are surrounded by either people they really don't know or people they do know, but who are as clueless about taxes and handling big money as they are. If they incorporate, suffer losses, or whatever - let them file for a refund like everybody else and the IRS will decide if it's legit before giving anything back and they won't end up in jail! I don't love the IRS but the whole system seems designed to let the record companies, managers and TV networks and the IRS set people up to be prosecuted for tax fraud. They figured out with wage earners very quickly that withholding is the only way to protect them from themselves. If the income tax was still a deal where you had to save up and pay at the end of the year, 99% of us would be in jail now.

Once you become a star you think the law doesn't apply to you. They(the IRS) would rather go after a big star than joe blow. Going after a big star gets the IRS pub, where going after joe blow makes no news. Don't get me wrong they go after joe blow to you just don't hear about it.
