Actor Darius McCrary is recovering after a bad fall from the stage during a performance with the touring stage play, 'Rumors,' in Dayton, Ohio .

The former 'Family Matter's' star is staring alongside singer LeToya Luckett, comic George Wilborn, actress Telma Hopkins ('Half & Half') and comedian Gary Owen in the production created by playwright J.D. Lawrence.

The 31-year-old former child star was backstage in between scenes during the show standing on an elevated part of the set and leaned forward while speaking to Wilborn. McCrary then plunged from the platform, landing on his back with his legs in the air.

"It happened so fast, man. I was talking to George and the next thing I knew was that I was on my back with this big wood two-by-four between me," McCrary told me via cell phone from Michigan, where he was recovering.

The actor said he didn't break anything, but suffered a lot of tissue bruising and extreme pain in his lower back.

"The pain I am in is worse than the pain I felt after my snowboarding accident," he said.

McCrary was rushed the hospital following the accident and is now temporarily walking with a cane.

'Rumors' cancelled two shows following the actor's fall and singer Tony Terry is being brought in to temporarily fill in for McCrary. He hopes to be back onstage by the time the play hits Richmond, Virginia on Feb. 24.

The Walnut, Calif.-bred actor was featured on the December 2007 issue of Sister 2 Sister in a controversial interview about his relationship with former video vixen turned bestselling author, Karrine Steffans.

He's also had several other high-profile relationships, having dated actress Nona Gaye, singer Mikki Howard, actress Tracee Ellis Ross, Coko of SWV, Shikiri Johnson (ex-wife of NFL star Keyshawn Johnson) and Ty James (daughter of late Rick James).

McCrary was briefly married to a Las Vegas stripper named Juliette Merrill Vann. The two wed in December of 2005 and filed for divorce five weeks later.

The actor is slated to star in Marlon and Shawn Wayans' scripted VH1 comedy, 'The Life and Times of Marcus 'Felony' Brown,' which shot its pilot last fall before the writer's strike.
